The Senate Security Committee, led by Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, is reviewing National Police Service rules to check if they breach constitutional guarantees of gender equality.

Nominated Senator Veronica Maina criticized the practice of dismissing pregnant officers, saying that pregnancy is not a disciplinary issue or a disability and should not prevent women from pursuing careers in public service.

Committee members are now calling for other options, such as postponing training so recruits can complete it after giving birth, instead of being permanently removed from the service.

Observers note that the current policy deters women from joining the police, even as the government tries to boost female representation in security agencies.
