Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has ordered the indefinite closure of Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, following a devastating dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 16 students.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday, May 28, leaving several learners injured and others traumatised after the inferno swept through one of the school dormitories.

Speaking during a visit to the institution, Ogamba said the government had constituted a multi-agency team to coordinate emergency response efforts, investigate the cause of the tragedy, and support affected families and students.

“As a government, we have formed a multi-agency team that will handle this crisis together with the school community and parents,” said the CS.

Ogamba described the incident as a painful tragedy that would leave a lasting impact on the school community and the country at large.

“I know the pain of losing friends and classmates will remain with us for a long time. I urge everyone to continue supporting one another through prayer, comfort, and encouragement during this difficult period,” he added.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the fire as families mourn the loss of their loved ones.
