President William Samoei Ruto has appointed Justice Mohamed Abdullahi Warsame as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya, strengthening the country’s highest court.
The appointment was published in a special issue of the The Kenya Gazette dated May 5, 2026, in line with Article 166(1)(b) of the Constitution. The law requires the President to appoint judges based on recommendations from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Chief Justice Martha Koome had earlier announced Warsame’s nomination following a vetting process that assessed his experience, integrity, and suitability for the role.
Justice Warsame holds a law degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
He has served as a judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya since 2012, after working in the High Court where he handled commercial and criminal cases.
He has also contributed to justice reforms, including leading efforts to promote alternative sentencing that helped decongest prisons. His experience extends to the JSC, where he has served in key administrative roles.
His appointment fills a vacancy at the Supreme Court, which remains the final arbiter of constitutional and legal disputes in Kenya.
