As the 2027 General Election draws closer, more Kenyan journalists are stepping out of the newsroom and into the political arena, signaling a growing shift within the media industry.
Several high-profile figures, especially from Royal Media Services and its flagship station Citizen TV, are either declaring bids or being linked to elective positions across the country.

Trevor Ombija has already launched his campaign for the Nyakach parliamentary seat, focusing on education, security, and development. Willis Raburu is also making political moves, targeting the Kisumu Senate seat with backing from the Orange Democratic Movement.

In Mombasa, Lulu Hassan continues to be linked to the Mvita parliamentary race despite dismissing the claims. Stephen Letoo is also emerging as a potential contender for the Kilgoris seat, although he is yet to declare .

Tina Ogal has taken a clear step by joining ODM and announcing her interest in the Embakasi East parliamentary seat.
Beyond Citizen TV, the trend is spreading. Michael Njenga is eyeing the Kabete seat, while Alex Mwakideu has been mentioned in discussions around the Kilifi governor race.
The shift highlights how journalists are moving from covering politics to actively shaping it, using their public influence and communication skills to connect with voters.
