Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has formally written to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula seeking the immediate recall of Parliament for an emergency sitting aimed at addressing the rising cost of fuel.
In his request, Nyoro is urging the Speaker to convene all 350 Members of Parliament during the current recess to deliberate on urgent legislative proposals that could lower fuel prices by up to KSh27 per litre.

I respectfully write to request your consideration for the recall of the National Assembly from recess, pursuant to its mandate under the Constitution and the Standing Orders, to deliberate on urgent proposed legislative amendments aimed at reducing the cost of fuel in the country,” Nyoro stated.
The legislator is pushing for the special sitting to be held on Monday, May 18—coinciding with a planned nationwide strike by matatu operators and motorists protesting the recent fuel price hike.
“In the circumstances, I humbly request your office to favourably consider exercising its authority to recall the National Assembly from recess for the purpose of facilitating the tabling, deliberation, and consideration of the said proposed amendments,” he added.

Currently, the National Assembly is on a long recess running from May 1 to May 25, 2026, with normal sittings expected to resume on May 26.

The push comes in the wake of a sharp increase in fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). Super petrol rose by KSh16.65 to retail at KSh214.25 per litre in Nairobi, while diesel recorded a historic jump of KSh46.29 to KSh242.92.
Nyoro has already tabled two key motions aimed at easing the burden on consumers. The first seeks to abolish KSh7 from the KSh25 Road Maintenance Levy, while the second proposes zero-rating fuel products.
Additionally, the MP is calling for amendments to the VAT Act to remove the current 8 per cent Value Added Tax on petroleum products, effectively making petrol, diesel, and kerosene VAT-exempt. If adopted, the changes could see consumers save approximately KSh15.87 per litre on petrol and KSh17.99 on diesel.

The proposed measures now hinge on whether the Speaker will approve the recall of Parliament to fast-track debate and potential implementation.
