The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced a reduction in diesel prices following nationwide protests and a matatu strike triggered by the recent increase in fuel costs.

In a statement released on Monday, May 18, EPRA said the revised fuel prices will be effective from May 19 to June 14, 2026.

Under the new pricing structure, diesel in Nairobi will retail at KSh232.86 per litre after a reduction of KSh10.06. Super Petrol prices will remain unchanged at KSh214.25 per litre, while kerosene prices have risen sharply by KSh38.60 to retail at KSh191.38 per litre.

According to EPRA, the changes were informed by concerns raised by public transport operators over the widening price gap between diesel and kerosene.

The regulator noted that the large difference in pricing posed a risk of fuel adulteration, prompting the review.

The announcement came hours after matatu operators staged a nationwide strike that paralysed transport services in several parts of the country on Monday, May 18.

The demonstrations, led by groups including the Matatu Owners Association and the Association of Matatu Transport Owners, disrupted operations in at least 28 counties, with Nairobi among the most affected.

Thousands of commuters were stranded as matatu operators protested against the fuel price adjustments announced by EPRA on May 14. The transport disruption also forced some businesses to close early, while learning in several schools was interrupted.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen later addressed the nation, acknowledging the concerns raised by matatu stakeholders while condemning cases of looting and vandalism reported during the protests.

Murkomen further confirmed that four people lost their lives during the demonstrations, while more than 30 others sustained injuries.

Later in the evening, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi held discussions with representatives from the matatu sector before the government announced the reduction in diesel prices.
