Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), is seeking a sixth term in office as elections take place this Saturday at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu. Atwoli, who has been at the helm of COTU since 2001, is widely expected to win, with 42 affiliated trade unions endorsing him for another term.

Atwoli, 76, remains the longest-serving Secretary General of COTU, having overseen significant growth in the organization, with membership surging from 300,000 to over 4 million. He has also held prominent international positions, including President of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity and Vice President of the International Trade Union
Confederation.

Atwoli's experience and influence in labor-related issues have earned him widespread support, with some union leaders citing his expertise and international recognition. However, concerns about age and succession have been raised, with some calling for new leadership.
COTU represents nearly 5 million workers from public and private sectors, and Atwoli's re-election will likely solidify his position as a key figure in Kenya's labor movement.
